what are your intentions with your current hardware upon replacement?

old hardware makes a great test box for both hardware and software, so its good for troubleshooting and for playing around with questionable software or new OS's like various distros of linux

and yes, i get that much heat from my laptop, in order for the Vista install process to complete, i literally had to start the install, plug in my laptop, and then leave it in my refrigerator while it installed, no joke.

Thats why we have VirtualBox, and VMware (we want him to donate the old box to me ;))

Are you serious? Your laptop got that hot... when I installed Vista (note: i do not use vista) it performed very cool the entire time. You must have cooling problems or something.

Hmm, VirtualBox is better than VMWare.

If your old box has Decent HDD, load up linux (free) and use Samba to create a file share. (Compatible with windows)

Hi,

I currently have a quite a few systems at home, but my two main ones would be one for *nix stuff / desktop / e-mail - which is what I do mostly these days. The specs are:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+
1024 MB Memory (2 X 512 MB Dual channel Corsair Platinum Edition XLL)
GeForce 6800 128 MB Vanilla

My gaming system (although I only use it about once a week if I am lucky) specs are:

AMD AM2 5200+
1024 MB Memory (2 X 512 MB Dual Channel Kingston modules)
GeForce 8800 320 MB GTS

Yes, I know I need to swap the memory module setups around - I just haven't had time ;)

I have an older but custom built rig. It's a 2500 AMD Athlon XP barton. Has a Radeon 9800Pro, 80GB HDD, 1GB of Ram, and it's my gaming rig. I have a router built out of 500mhz, 256mb ram, gateway pc. It's loaded with DD-WRT firmware and makes for an excellent router. I couldn't ask for a better router. I have two servers, one is AMD 2100 Athlon, 256MB Ram, 20GB hdd, and is used as an internet filter for people. It also servers as a print server for a laser and for an inkjet. The second server is a 1600 Athlon with 512 MB of ram, and is used for testing and is also a file server. It runs VMware and tests out new platforms. I have two laptops, one is gateway tablet, and the other is an avertec. My laptop has 1.83Ghz Intel Pentium M with centrino, 1GB 667 mhz ram, 80GB, hdd, and tablet features. The Averatec is a Athlon XP-M 2600, 512MB Ram, and 40GB hdd. I also have a few other computers and stuff which isn't worth mentioning. Whew, that was a long list of stuff. Before you ask, I am a geek. Just to let you know
