The first time I thought about it, I had just finished taking something apart, wondering how it worked and how I could make it better. I was the child that would run around the house with a screwdriver and disassemble just about anything I could get my hands on (this agitating my mother, as "young lady's should not act like boys"). Funny, still to this day. :D

I never really got "into" computers until I was about 15, have not stopped since! Been online since a 14.4 and downloading Netscape on 12 floppies (quite painful). I know other geeks go back further, but I was busy with a busy life, and computers came later. Like I said, I have not stopped since. I am female, and I am a geek. I game when I can, I work alot, I take care of my family, but deep down, I'm never far from my computer. Esp. since I just got a blackberry *woot* emails to me anywhere anytime. ;)

I prefer Linux (slackware started with), ran afew others (SuSe, FC5, etc.) but Windows now for work related things. I work with a wonderful team. Windows for my work, but alas soon enough..........I will have *nix machine back up and running to play around with!

So, what makes you a geek?

I am just happy doing anything on a computer. I was accepted into a class years ago which was run by private tutors but this was a government funded, one off offer for the company. It was an extensive 8 week course, in which the group covered everything from word processing, to networking.

The part I loved best was when we arrived at "school" one day to find all the computers dismantled and the cords all placed in a heap on one side of the room. It was our job to put the computers back together and in working order. I think that is when I was hooked.

i think that besides working for a tech blog, what makes me a geek, would be that nothing makes me more giddy than a UPS or FedEx delivery

you want to get my adrenaline pumping tell me you are sending me all the components to build a bunch of computers and setup a network but i have to put everything together and setup all the software and cabling, that sounds like work to some, but give me some good tunes and the proper tools and that is like a gift to me.

Hi Rockit,

Wow - it's always interesting to hear from female geeks - I must sat it is not often one gets to hear about one ;)

In my opinion, what makes me quite a geek is basically contemplating about computers and technology around the clock. It's actually quite frightening when I actually analyse how much time I spend not only thinking about IT but also partaking in it.

I also thoroughly enjoy programming and internet development.

I guess the end result is it's a general fascination with IT that makes you a geek in the end - not that being a geek is a bad thing at all ^^

Yea, we tend to hide in the shadows. I try to not analyse what time I spend doing what - then I start to worry its more than a hobby. I dont program or design - I know thats none of my skills in that area.

I don't know how you exactly describe a "geek" but if it is someone who is smart at one particular subject then I understand.

I really like technology and like to learn about it I'm also very tech-savvy with it.

Being on the computer is what I love to do. I have two full time jobs all via the computer so I guess that right there makes me a nerd. I'm on for nearly 13 hours a day and enjoy every second of it.

The first time was when I was 3 years of age. My folks plopped me down in front of an old PowerMac and opened up the game series "thinking things".

Past that, I suppose, was when my school (4th grade) gave me an old Pacard Bell computer, and I took that thing apart and put it back together probably 20 times. It worked every time. ^-^
